April 1, 2008: Post-Opening Day

I somehow find it appropriate that the day after Opening Day 2008 for the Astros is April Fool’s Day.  So, how was the first game of the season for the Astros with a new look lineup?

I’d give it about 2.5 stars.

Was it great?

No.

Was it terrible?

No.

Was it memorable?

Definitely not.

What was extremely frustrating was that Jake Peavy was not at his best.  We could have had our way with him.  He had 22 pitches in the first inning and it was obvious that he didn’t have his best stuff in the first few innings of the game.  We had a chance to score a lot of runs on him and give Roy a head up on the game.  But, in typical Astros fashion, we left men on base.

A lot.

And how is that big offensive line-up that we now have?

They scored zero runs last night.  So far, I am not impressed.

One thing did happen last night that did make me happy. Michael Bourn can run!  In the first inning, he didn’t even get all that much of a jump and he still got to the base with time to write his name in the dirt.  Maybe we finally have a replacement for Willy T.  It will be nice to see what he and Hunter Pence can do on the base paths.

Is it time to panic?

Nah.

It’s one game.  I was hoping for a better showing, but it is the beginning of the season.  Roy will be fine and hopefully the Astros will SCORE tonight.

One other thing… is it so hard for MLB to have the Opening Night for every team be in their time zone?  The Cubs & Brewers got to play each other.  Why couldn’t we play St. Louis or something?  What about the kids?  Isn’t it always about the kids?
