May 22, 2008: Chacon Finally Notches a Win

Sometimes it’s nice to see a record end.  Shawn Chacon did just that last night by ending his no decision streak at 9 starts.  He got his first win of the season and the Astros took the series from the first place Cubs.

It looked like we were in for a long night after the first inning.  Chacon looked awful as he gave up 3 quick runs.  But that was the extent of the Cubs scoring.  In the next 6 innings, the Cubs got 2 hits and struck out five times.  Not sure what happened after the first inning that made him settle down, but maybe Shawn should bottle it up and hand it out to some of the other starters on the team.

Here’s an interesting stat… Chacon has the best ERA of all of our starting pitching at 4.11.  Not great, but not too shabby considering he was the #5 starter and alot of people thought his career was over.  If he keeps up the solid work, then I am sure that the Astros will resign him for next year.  He has done a good job on the mound and, frankly, I feel more comfortable with him pitching than any other starter at the moment.

On another note, Lance Berkman was on The Dan Patrick Show today.  You should be able to hear the interview online.  (It usually takes them a few hours to a day to get the link up.)  He should have a full passion bucket by the time the interview starts.

Speaking of Lance, Sports Illustrated features him in there Scouting Report this week.  I think it’s funny that they refer to him as “quiet”.  We all know that Lance is not a quiet man.  Rick Klaw sent me the article last night and he thinks that they are speaking more about the fact that Lance isn’t in the limelight off the field like Derek Jeter or Barry Bonds.  I thought that they should have used a different adjective.  Anybody named “Fat Elvis” can’t be thought of as quiet — off the field or on it.
